Apple has finally crossed a line it spent more than a decade refusing to cross. The company has released its first MacBook Pro with a real touchscreen, paired with a brand-new tandem OLED display. At the same time, it quietly updated the more affordable 14-inch MacBook Pro and the iMac with the new M6 chip. Here\u2019s a detailed look at what\u2019s actually new, how it feels in use, and who these machines are for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Headline Machine: MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This is the big one. Available in both 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, the new MacBook Pro is Apple\u2019s first laptop to combine a touchscreen with an OLED panel. Apple is calling the display PROLED XDR. It\u2019s a tandem OLED design that reaches up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness for both HDR and SDR content and claims a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio. In early impressions, the screen looks significantly richer and more contrasty than the previous Liquid Retina XDR panels. Blacks are deeper, colors pop more, and the overall image feels more vibrant without looking oversaturated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The touch sensor is built directly into the display panel rather than sitting on top of it. That design choice helps keep the screen thin and reduces latency compared with many Windows touchscreen laptops. Early hands-on reports describe scrolling, pinching, zooming, and dragging as smooth and responsive. Apple has made some thoughtful software adjustments: when you touch the screen, menus and interface elements spread out slightly so they\u2019re easier to hit with a finger. Switch back to the trackpad or a mouse, and everything returns to its normal spacing. This is not a 2-in-1 convertible. The laptop stays in traditional clamshell form. You\u2019re reaching up to touch the screen while it\u2019s open at a normal viewing angle. Apple has redesigned the hinge to keep the display more stable when you press on it, which helps reduce wobble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other notable design changes include a thinner and lighter chassis (the 14-inch model comes in around 3 pounds) and the return of the illuminated Apple logo on the lid. The machine also gains a Dynamic Island at the top of the screen, similar to the iPhone, which can show live activities, notifications, and quick controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Performance note:<\/strong> These high-end touchscreen models use the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, not the newer M6. Memory configurations go up to 128GB, and storage can reach 16TB on the top-end models.
