Microsoft is giving roughly 60,000 employees the option to leave the company voluntarily. That works out to about a quarter of its global workforce of around 223,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program, officially called the Voluntary Exit Offer, was announced in late October 2026 by Chief People Officer Amy Coleman in an internal memo that was later shared publicly. Eligible employees work in participating teams across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and India. The offer reaches up to level 70 on Microsoft\u2019s internal ranking system, which includes general managers and some employees with vice president titles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not every team is included. Sales organizations, certain engineering groups, marketing, data center staff, cybersecurity, and quantum computing teams are largely excluded. In contrast, teams working on AI experiences, Copilot, Xbox, Windows, and Devices are among those participating. Microsoft has said eligibility depends on each business unit\u2019s priorities, customer commitments, and workforce needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the Package Includes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The financial terms follow Microsoft\u2019s standard severance framework rather than a special enhanced buyout. Depending on an employee\u2019s level and years of service, the payout can reach up to 39 weeks of base pay for many staff. Employees at lower internal levels typically receive one week of base pay for every six months of service, while those at slightly higher levels receive two weeks for every six months. Higher-level employees may see different structures, including packages that can reach a full year of salary in some cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the cash component, the offer includes continued stock vesting for a set period, temporary healthcare coverage, and career transition support. Unlike the earlier retirement program earlier in 2026, this package does not include the extended healthcare benefits that made the previous offer particularly attractive to longer-tenured employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Employees have until early December to decide. Those who accept are expected to leave by the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Microsoft Is Doing This<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The company is in the middle of a major strategic shift. It is pouring tens of billions of dollars\u2014potentially in the range of $170\u2013175 billion in 2026 alone\u2014into AI infrastructure, data centers, and related technology. At the same time, leadership has been steadily reshaping the workforce to focus resources on high-priority areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not Microsoft\u2019s first move of the year. Earlier in 2026, the company ran its first-ever voluntary retirement program, which was open to about 8,750 longer-serving U.S. employees. Roughly 30 percent of those eligible accepted the offer. In July, Microsoft also cut about 4,800 jobs, representing roughly 2 percent of its global workforce at the time. The new Voluntary Exit Offer is broader in scope and gives participating teams more flexibility to adjust headcount without immediate forced layoffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Microsoft has framed the program as a way to give employees who are already considering a future outside the company a supported path to leave, while helping the business adapt to changing needs. The company has also made clear that traditional layoffs remain an option if further reductions are needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bigger Picture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Tech companies have spent the past couple of years balancing aggressive investment in artificial intelligence with growing pressure to control costs and improve efficiency. Microsoft\u2019s approach here is relatively measured compared to some peers. Instead of launching another large round of forced cuts, it is offering a voluntary path and letting employees decide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How many people actually take the offer will determine how much the workforce ultimately shrinks. Early signals from the company suggest it expects a lower participation rate than the earlier retirement program. Even a modest acceptance rate, however, could still result in several thousand departures by the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For employees who accept, the package provides a financial bridge and transition support during a period of significant change in the industry. For those who stay, the message is clear: Microsoft is continuing to reshape itself around AI and its highest-priority product areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This latest move highlights a broader tension playing out across big tech. Companies are spending heavily to stay competitive in artificial intelligence while carefully managing headcount and costs.
