The change, which rolled out quietly around October 27, 2026, is aimed at preventing intellectual property infringement through AI-assisted coding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new rule was first noticed by users examining Claude Code, Anthropic\u2019s coding-focused tool that runs on the Opus 5.5 model. It instructs the system with two clear sentences: build original games, games in a genre, or projects based on a user\u2019s own designs and assets. Do not build a recreation of a specific existing game, even if it is renamed or described as original.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthropic technical staff member Addy Osmani later confirmed the update on social media. He explained that the company added the language because using Claude to infringe on intellectual property violates the company\u2019s usage policy. Original games, genre-based projects, and games built from a user\u2019s own designs are still intended to work normally. Osmani also noted that Anthropic plans to keep refining the system to find the right balance and invited users to report cases where the tool incorrectly blocks legitimate personal work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the Change Happened<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The update comes amid growing frustration in the game development community. Over the past several months, platforms like Steam have been flooded with low-effort AI-generated games, often referred to as \u201cAI slop.\u201d Some of these projects closely copied existing titles or even demos that had only just been released during events like Steam Next Fest. Developers raised concerns that AI tools were making it far too easy to clone someone else\u2019s work, sometimes for profit and sometimes simply for attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Valve, the company behind Steam, had already signaled it was looking into the problem. Reports of AI-assisted clones and even threats against indie developers (where someone threatened to fully recreate a demo before the original team could finish their game) added pressure. Anthropic\u2019s move appears to be a direct response to those complaints and to broader worries about AI being used for clear intellectual property infringement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Still Works (and What Doesn\u2019t)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Claude can still help with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Completely original game ideas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Games that fit into a broad genre (for example, a platformer, a puzzle game, or a roguelike)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Projects built from the user\u2019s own designs, assets, mechanics, and art<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What it will refuse is recreating a specific existing title, even if the user tries to rebrand it, slightly change the name, or claim it as an original project. Some users have also reported that the restriction can sometimes interfere with legitimate reverse-engineering, debugging, modding, or working on their own licensed projects. In a few cases, developers building authorized adaptations of existing board games or using their own codebases said the system still blocked them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthropic has acknowledged that the system is not perfect and said it will continue iterating. The company has invited feedback when the tool turns down work that is genuinely the user\u2019s own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bigger Context<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the clearer examples so far of a major AI company drawing a harder, more specific line around copyright in creative coding tools. While most AI models have long had general rules against helping with illegal activity, this update is more targeted. It focuses on preventing the recreation of particular games rather than broadly limiting all game development help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For independent developers who were already worried about AI-powered copycats flooding storefronts, the change is a welcome step. It reduces one easy pathway for low-effort clones. For users who relied on Claude to quickly prototype clones, ports, or near-copies of existing games, it creates a new limitation. Other AI tools may still allow more flexibility, so some developers may shift their workflows as a result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The update also highlights a tension that keeps appearing in the AI industry. Companies train models on vast amounts of existing data, including creative works, and then face pressure to prevent those same models from being used to copy protected material. Anthropic\u2019s approach here tries to draw a practical boundary: support original creation and genre-level work, but refuse clear attempts to recreate someone else\u2019s specific game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, Claude is now less willing to help users clone someone else\u2019s game.
