It\u2019s making a serious push to become a full-blown mobile carrier in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a Bloomberg report, SpaceX is in talks to secure access to at least <strong>80,000 cell sites<\/strong> across the country. That number is big enough to put it in the same league as the existing national carriers. The company is reportedly speaking with major tower owners, including Crown Castle, as it tries to piece together the ground infrastructure needed for a hybrid satellite-and-terrestrial network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The news hit the market hard. Shares of AT&amp;T and T-Mobile dropped several percent, while Verizon also slid. At the same time, tower companies like Crown Castle and American Tower jumped, since a new big customer would mean more lease revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why This Matters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For years, SpaceX has talked about expanding Starlink beyond home internet. The company already has a direct-to-cell service that lets regular phones connect to satellites in remote areas. But satellites alone can\u2019t deliver the dense, high-capacity coverage people expect in cities and suburbs. That\u2019s where traditional cell sites come in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By locking up tens of thousands of tower locations, SpaceX would be able to combine its satellite constellation with a real terrestrial network. The goal appears to be a hybrid system that works outdoors, indoors, in rural areas, and in dense urban environments \u2014 something closer to a true national carrier than a pure satellite play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This isn\u2019t a small side project. Analysts estimate that building a competitive nationwide terrestrial network could cost more than $80 billion and take years. SpaceX has already moved on the spectrum side, recently agreeing to buy low-band airwaves that Elon Musk called a critical piece of the puzzle for complete phone coverage in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Reaction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The existing carriers clearly see this as a threat. A fourth national player with SpaceX\u2019s resources, satellite assets, and willingness to spend would change the competitive landscape. Even if a full network takes years to build, the possibility alone is enough to pressure stock prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tower owners, on the other hand, stand to benefit. More demand for sites means better leverage and potentially higher rents. Crown Castle\u2019s CEO recently said the company is talking to \u201call parties\u201d when asked about satellite players, without confirming any specific deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Comes Next<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing is finalized yet. These are still talks, not signed contracts. Building out 80,000 sites, installing equipment, securing backhaul, and launching a consumer mobile service is a massive undertaking. SpaceX would also need to navigate regulation, competition, and the messy reality of operating a consumer telecom business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, the direction is clear. SpaceX is no longer content to be just a satellite internet provider. It wants to compete head-on with AT&amp;T, Verizon, and T-Mobile \u2014 and it\u2019s starting to assemble the pieces to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether it can actually pull off a fourth national carrier remains an open question.
